Off of their 2000 same name debut, Lucy Pearl recruited Snoop Dogg and Q-tip for a song that defined my Sophomore year of high school.  This was my JOINT! :)

God how I love this song! From his 1993 album ” The Truth” came one of the saddest love songs to ever come through your speakers. Couple that with an excessively tragic video and you have TEARS galore. Get some tissue and enjoy.

My Hardknock TV fam caught up w/ Chamillionaire and Paul wall and discussed Race Relations, New albums and Blood Diamonds. Pop the hood for Pt. 2 of the interview! (What up H-Town?!)

This past week I spent a few days having fun in one of my favorite cities: H-town.

Upon my arrival back in L.A, I spent about 20 minutes waiting for my luggage at the LAX baggage claim. While standing there, contemplating if things could possibly go any slower, I noticed a group of 5 giddy teenagers, standing by me pointing and giggling.

Exhaustedly I walked outside w/ luggage intact to wait for my ride into the city. All of a sudden a young guy (see above) walks up to me shaking and says “oh…my…god…are you Mariah Carey?!”…. the rest of the convo goes as follows:

Me: No i’m not.

Him: Are you sure?!

Me: Yes I’m sure that I am not Mariah Carey.

Him: I love the emancipation of Mimi!!!!

Me: So do I.

Him: Can I please take a picture w/ you just in case you are her???!!!

Me: *sigh* I’m positive I’m not her, but…sure…

We then proceeded to take 15 or so excitedly awkward pics. Here is one. LOL…SMH.

I can’t believe it’s been 1 year since we lost one of the most important men in music history.

I was in the car, stuck in traffic, and randomly turned on the radio on June 25th, 2009.

The second I heard an MJ song playing on every station I scanned, my heart sank. Secretly I was hoping maybe it was his birthday, or maybe for some strange reason every programer in Los Angeles had put him in their playlist at the same time. As I pressed the dial back on 93.5 and heard the DJ emotionally crack the mic announcing his death I immediately pulled over and cried.

Michael Jackson has been a part of my life since I was born. He was the first artist I knew of. The first person whose songs I memorized. As a 3 year old listening to listening to “Bad”, I ran around enthusiastically telling my mother that he was my boyfriend.

As a fan, I desperately wanted to meet him. As a radio personality my dream was to  interview him.

Quite possibly MJ was the most misunderstood person in history. In later years his monumental career was often overshadowed with controversy and jokes. The child molestation allegations, his skin, blanket hanging over a banister, it was all such a surreal train wreck. We forgot about the music that brought us joy, choosing instead to ridicule the person.

How could we have ever expected someone who played their entire life out in front of us to fit our standards of normalcy? He wasn’t born to be “normal.” So many times he had let us know his longings for a childhood. His kindness. His genius.

I pray he finds the peace in heaven that he wasn’t allowed to have in life. R.I.P MJ!!

Read this great article AOL’s Boom Box did on him

I often get asked how I got started in radio. That questions usually leads to the follow up of “How do I break into it?”

Well… above answers the first question (give or take).

And to answer the second…apply for internships (yes work for free), network, create opportunity where there is none, get there early and stay late.

Biggest lesson I learned (so far): Not everyone is going to believe in you and your talent. Don’t take it personally. Even the most successful person has been told ‘no’ more times then they’ve heard ‘yes’, so at the end of the day… be your own biggest cheerleader and at all times *Dream Big* :)

DJ Eque is that you?!

Circa 1992, before she spun her way into the hearts of many, miss Eque (then known as E.Q) was getting courted by major labels for her lyric’s and smooth dance moves (see crotch grabbing above).

I get jocked so much you think I had a Bozack!!

(I love this!!)

Obviously Alicia dropped this masterpiece a few months ago, and there have been a few remix’s floating around. Welp, this one came straight from her label to my inbox with the directions to “Roll with this one, delete others” so….enjoy! :)
